Loft Insulation in tenements
Are you thinking about putting on loft insulation this summer? Loft insulation is one of the most cost efficient ways of reducing energy bills over the winter months, and can warm your flat straight away. If you have access to your loft it is very easy and quick to do. However, doing it all on your own can be quite daunting. Why not ask your neighbours to help you? If you know when your insulation is arriving, put a call out on WhatsApp - there are people in the street who are willing to lend a hand.
Energy saving insulation grants and loans
If you have read our tips on saving energy, or have looked at our review of Glasgow Council’s push towards net zero and district heat zones, you will know that saving energy and cutting our heating bills are going to be our responsibility for some time yet. However, there are some grant and loan schemes that could help to pay for some simple insulation options for your home.
Home Energy Scotland offer free advice and support to help you make your home warmer, reduce energy bills, and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future. It is funded by the Scottish Government and managed by Energy Saving Trust.
Below I have included some information and links to potential funding, ways to get in touch with us about applying for funding as well as a helpful tool people can use to learn a little bit more about the energy efficiency of their flat.
Funding Options
The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan schemes are funded by the Scottish Government, offering a grant and/or interest-free loans to owner-occupiers in Scotland. The schemes are designed to help with the cost of energy efficiency improvements. Grant funding is available for some measures, and both grant and loan funds are subject to availability.
Grant funding: householders can access Home Energy Scotland grant funding without taking out a Home Energy Scotland loan. Grant funding for energy efficiency improvements is up to 75% of the combined cost of the improvements up to the maximum grant amount of £7,500 (or £9,000 for households which qualify for the rural uplift). Grant funding for a heat pump and biomass is up to £7,500 (or £9,000 if the household qualifies for the rural uplift). The remainder of funding requested can be taken up as an optional interest-free Home Energy Scotland loan up to a maximum funding limit per improvement. Loan funding is also available on its own for improvements which are not eligible for a grant.
Both Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan funding will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis subject to availability. Funding is reserved for householders when they receive a written funding offer, not on application to the scheme. Find out more about the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan schemes.
Warmer Homes Scotland is part of the Home Energy Efficiency programmes for Scotland (HEEPS). It is funded by the Scottish Government. This programme can offer a range of energy saving home improvements to help improve comfort and reduce energy bills. The costs are usually met by the Scottish Government. If there is a client contribution required, there is no obligation to proceed, but there are funding options available. Read more about Warmer Homes Scotland.
Full eligibility and any improvements offered are subject to an assessment of your home, which is carried out by Warmworks, the Warmer Homes Scotland Managing agent. Warmworks treats all households as priorities and will work hard to ensure that every customer receives the help they need in the most efficient way and in the quickest time possible.
How to get in Touch
Customers can either submit an enquiry through our online email service. Or if they would prefer to speak to a phone advisor they can call Home Energy Scotland for free on 0808 808 2282. Lines are open 09:00am until 05:00pm Monday to Friday.
Home Energy Check
Customers can always give the online Home Energy Check a try. This is a free online tool which recommends the energy saving improvements customers could make in their property and calculates the energy savings these could result in. Once a customer has completed the first section of the online Home Energy Check, they should select the ‘home details’ tab and complete all sections as best they can so our Advisors can accurately get information on the energy efficiency of their property, and they can get the best advice regarding improvements.
Customer's properties may have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) logged on the Scottish EPC register, which they can use the information to help complete their Home Energy Check report.
There is also a scheme called the Great British Insulation Scheme, which is run by OfGem. It is designed to deliver improvements to the least energy-efficient homes in Great Britain to help tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions. You can fill out a form to see if you are eligible for any support: https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/environmental-and-social-schemes/great-british-insulation-scheme/great-british-insulation-scheme-homeowners-and-tenants
